Danish Leopards in Helmand - From the crew’s perspective
Danish Army Leopard 2A5 main battle tanks were deployed to Afghanistan from 2007 to 2014 as part of the Danish contribution to NATO’s ISAF (International Security Assistance Force) mission. The purpose of this book is to tell the stories of the Danish tankers from the ‘turret hatch perspective’. Their tales are told as the soldiers relayed them to the author. The reader will therefore gain an insight into some very personal stories about the experiences of crew members while they were ‘at work’ in Afghanistan. This book gives the reader an insight into the otherwise very closed world of these specialist soldiers – the realm of the tankers.
In order to be a tanker, the crew members have to meet stringent physical demands, have to be mentally stable, have to be able to multi-task in a manner that is hard to understand if you have not tried being a tanker, and also to have social skills that are higher than average. Four people form the crew of a Leopard 2A5 tank and naturally they spend countless hours together, both in and out of the tank. Thus, they need to be able to get along well, using their social skills as the glue which makes all the other roles of the commander, the gunner, the loader and the driver come together as a coherent crew. This is a crew that can handle a very complex machine, and excel in the deadly environment which was the habitat of the Leopard 2 in Afghanistan.
What do you say?
My first glimpse has not deceived me. Danish Leopards in Helmand - From the crew's perspective is an interesting, exciting and readable book. The experiences and also the feelings of the crews during the employment are reproduced impressively and informatively by the author. The high-quality insert photos and the appealing layout also help to repeat my recommendation of the preview!
Danish Leopards in Helmand - From the crew's perspective is, after my first insight, an interesting and readable book. The author manages to recreate the experiences and impressions of the Danish Leopard's crew members. An interesting look behind the scenes. High-quality photos and an appealing layout contribute to this. Definitely recommend!
This is a very high quality and well-designed book which is immediately pleasing to the eye. Good use of modern graphics help to make this an excellent addition to anyone interested in MBT operations and essential to all Leopard fans.
Military Modelling Magazine Vol. 47 No. 2
This book is a little different from other Trackpad Publishing titles as it covers the story of the men and machines who were on the ground. Each of the chapters is littered with high quality photographs taken during each of the deployments by the Danish crews. They cover everything from the routine to the unusual ...

Danish Leopards in Helmand is an important book because of the insight it provides on the condition of employment of one of the most advanced ground warfare weapon systems around today. Although the primary focus of the book is to recount the missions given to Danish tank crews in Afghanistan and how they went about accomplishing them, it does form an interesting corpus of iconographic material of that theater of operation. This corpus has everything to inspire, and quite a bit to inform, the modern armor enthusiast. It is a worthy read for anyone interested in armor, strategic studies and more generally in contemporary defense issues.

Danish Leopards in Helmand: From the crew’s perspective is an amazing look into the Danish armored force as see through the eyes of the men who called the Leopard 2A5 home during their deployment to Afghanistan. With the recent release of Danish Leopard 2A5DK and QRF from Trackpad Publishing, these two books intertwine, giving us the most comprehensive look into and at the Danish Leopard 2A5 MBT’s there is. I would suggest to anyone interested in the Danish Leopard MBT and the Danish military forces that they pick up either or both copies of Danish Leopards in Helmand: From the crew’s perspective and the new Danish Leopard 2A5DK and QRF books. Each book alone is an amazing look into and around these main battle tanks…together they make an exceptional collaboration containing a plethora of photographic referencing and mound of incredible information. Both books receive an extremely high grade from me and my recommendations for adding to your personal collection of books.
